The Governing Board of the PES has initiated programs and policies to accomplish the following;

• IEEE PES Long Range Plan Developed

• 2007 IEEE PES Goals:

  1. Address emerging technologies to accelerate their use
  2. Improve PES internal efficiency
  3. Provide a forum where all industry perspectives can come together to discuss issues and well-rounded position papers
  4. Develop and deliver relevant, practical education
  5. Develop strategy to address future workforce
  6. Boost the image of power engineering

IEEE PES Mission Statement

To be the leading provider of scientific and engineering information on electric power and energy for the betterment of society and the preferred professional development source for our members.

The PES will undergo a name change.

• Improve the visibility and image of power engineering and PES

– Attract talent to the industry and to PES  

– Ensure adequate academic infrastructure for pipeline development

Benefits and Approach for Name Change

• Benefits

– Better reflects the existing mission, scope, field of interest

– More relevant to current interests and aligns with global needs

– Aligns with the “Power & Energy” Magazine title

– Positions for increased interaction and external collaboration

– Improves external image

– Provides framework for embracing emerging technologies

– Maintains the IEEE PES acronym and identity

– Appeals to “Societal” interest of potential members

• Approach

– IEEE PES Board approval in June, 2007

– IEEE approval sought in November, 2007

– Constitution is being re-written, posted and will be voted upon by PES membership

– Bylaws are being re-written and posted

– Anticipated change to be effective in April, 2008

It is the PES plan to announce and implement the name change at the April 2008 T&D Convention.
