December, 1998 (updated October 19, 1999)
Dear ICC Members and Guests:
We have a unique opportunity to better understand the international technical organization called CIGRE. At the Fall 1999 meeting in St. Petersburg, FL USA, we will have a joint colloquium with CIGRE Study Committee 21 and you are invited to participate.
What is CIGRE? Well, our esteemed ICC colleague, Mr. Willem Boone tells me CIGRE is an international organization dealing with all aspects related to the development and operation of High Voltage Electric Power Systems. The total area of attention is quite broad; not only components (transformers, switchgear, cables, etc.) but also system planning, system operation, interference etc. are subjects of specific interest.
In Study Committee 21 all aspects related to High Voltage cables are dealt with, usually within the structure of working groups and task forces. The results are published in reports and guides that are often used as starting points for international standards.
- WG 21-02 Testing of Submarine Cables (HVDC and HVAC with Synthetic Insulation)
- WG 21-16 Partial Discharge Detection in Installed Cables
- WG 21-17 Laying and Installation Techniques
- WG 21/33 Overvoltages in AC Underground Cable Systems (a joint activity of SC21 and SC33)
- WG 21/23/33/15 Gas Insulated Links (a joint activity of SC21, SC23, SC33 and SC15)
- TF Interfaces (a joint activity of SC21 and SC15)
- Cross Bonded Cable Systems
- Technical and Environmental Issues Regarding Integration of Underground Cable Systems
- High Temperature Superconducting Cables
- Influence of Short Circuit on Public and Environment
- DC Extruded Cable Systems
- After Laying Tests
- Collecting and Handling Reliability Data
- Quality Assurance
CIGRE Study Committee 21 on HV Cable Systems will meet on Thursday and Friday before the Fall 1999 ICC meeting with a joint CIGRE/ICC Colloquium on Sunday. All ICC members and guests are encouraged to attend the Colloquium. The final schedule for this activity is shown below.
Joint CIGRE SC21/ICC Colloquium
New Developments in Extra High Voltage Cable Systems
To be Presented jointly by the Chairmen of SC21 and ICC
Participants are asked to put forward ideas and suggestions for Session Item 5 - possible future interactions between SC21 and ICC, and the two Chairmen would conclude the Colloquium with a brief joint summary.
Introductory "Special Report" to be prepared for each session jointly by a member of ICC & SC21.
Individuals who will prepare these Special Reports are to be selected by the respective organizations.
The Special Report documents should summarize the status, trends, and key issues related to the selected topics and contain several questions which participants will be expected to address during the colloquium.
Note: For those who are particularly in CIGRE in the meetings on Thursday and Friday, you can attend as an observer. If you need further information or if you have suggestions for the colloquium topics, please contact:
