Dear Ladies:
Thanks to Anne Tingley, the following enjoyable program
has been organized. On both days, the buses start boarding at
8:45 am and leave at 9:00 am.
Phoenix and 19 other communities make up what is
known as ìThe Valley of the Sunî, one of the fastest
growing areas in the nation. We will see the award winning architecture
of the legendary Frank Lloyd Wright at both the Gammage Center,
Arizona State University, and the luxurious Arizona Biltmore Resort,
a honeymoon spot. A knowledgeable tour guide will take us through
Scottsdale, ìthe Westís most western townî.
Old Town is now a popular tourist and shopping area. The tour
will continue to the fashionable Scottsdaleís Fifth Avenue
shops, the largest single marketplace for native American arts
and crafts in the country.
We will then move North, past the Scottsdale Fashion
Square to the Borgata, inspired by the fourteenís century
Italian town of San Gimignano. The tour will take us past the
nationís top resorts and the homes of the rich and famous
(Barry Goldwater, Walter McCune, Alice Cooper and Erma Bombeck),
and even the infamous (Leona Helmsley, Charles Keating). We will
also go past the Wrigley (chewing gum) Mansion.
From the foothills of Squaw Peak, we will travel
to the heart of Arizonaís financial and government district.
The tour will be concluded by a trip up to the top of South Mountain,
to Dobbin, a photo opportunity of this breathtaking vista. We
expect to be back by 1:00 pm. Lunch is not included.
The bus arrives at the Heard Museum at 9:45 am. The
Museum offers an excellent coverage of native culture and art.
A 45-minute guided tour of the native section is scheduled, followed
by free time for you to cover other exhibits or visit the Museumís
beautiful gift shop. At 11:30 am, we will be taken by bus to the
nearby Phoenix Art Museum, considered the major visual arts institution
in the Southwest, where cafeteria style lunch is available at
Eddieís Art Café, with reserved group seating. Lunch
cost is not included in the tour price which includes only bus
fare and admissions. A docent guided tour of the permanent exhibits
is planned at 1:00 pm. You may prefer, instead, one of the special
exhibits at your own expense ($5.00). Return is scheduled at 2:30
pm.
As in the past, complimentary breakfast will be
available daily from 7:30 to 8:45 AM.
I look forward to seeing each one of you at the Doubletree
Paradise Valley Resort.
Cordially,
Marguerite Mashikian
