Message from the Chairman

January 13, 2000

The reason a lot of professionals do not recognize an opportunity when they see it is that it usually goes around wearing overalls and looking like hard work. We have been extremely fortunate to have had Rick’s dynamic leadership for the past two years. Hard work is the main characteristic of his tenure and his efforts have provided new opportunities for the ICC to make a positive difference within our profession.

Do not fear! My first act as Chairman was to ensure that he continues to keep his overalls on. On behalf of the ICC, thank you Rick.

I plan to occasionally provide bits of wisdom for the ICC that I have obtained from my life’s experiences. My first installment follows:

"Having been married for just over four years, I can now answer one of the age old questions, which is, can a woman stay married to the same man for 50 years. The answer is no, because after just four years of marriage he is no longer the same man."

Logistically, over the next two years, we will meet this spring in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In the fall we will celebrate the true beginning of the new millennium, which officially begins in 2001, at the Don CeSar. For the 2001 Spring meeting we will meet in Dearborn, Michigan and for the fall 2001, our meeting is going to be a part of the IEEE/PES T&D Conference & Expo. Rick Hartlein and Ken Bow will act a co-chairs for this meeting establishing an agenda tailored to allow the ICC to meet its core functions and take advantage of the opportunities presented by the T&D conference.

I would like to close with a quote from Henry David Thoreu. "Almost all the noblest things have been achieved in the world by poor men, poor scholars, poor professional men, poets, men of genius. A certain staidness and sobriety, a certain moderation and restraint, a certain pressure of circumstances are good for men. His body was not made for luxuries. It sickens, sinks, and dies under them." The principle for the ICC from this quote is to not become discouraged by the pressures of today’s professional environment. That if we put forth the effort to provide useful technical standards and knowledge to the industry, at the end of the day we can look back and say, not only have we made a difference but the industry is better off as a result of our labor."

See ya’ll at the spring
