Claus Doench - 1930 - 1999

A dear friend and colleague, Claus Doench, suddenly passed away this past January.

Claus was born in 1930 in Germany. By 1934 he was sent for safety to live in England while his socially progressive parents remained working with the resistance in Germany. He was reunited with his mother in 1946, 12 years later. Claus became an electrician while in England and by 1956 he immigrated to Canada and was hired as an electrician by Canada Wire. Here his intellect was recognized and he was encouraged to attend the university. In 1959 he enrolled in the University of Toronto, graduating top in his class in 1962 on a British-American Oil Scholarship. Claus then returned to Canada Wire as an Engineer. Subsequently he returned to college earning his Masters degree in Engineering from the University of British Columbia. While a quiet man, Claus became a highly recognized Engineer with Canada Wire and eventually joined Pirelli Cable in the St. Jean Quebec facilities, in the early 1970’s,

During his career Claus became a well known authority for his design work in high voltage cable systems and submarine cable applications. Claus was passionate about his work, which was a creative outlet for his tremendous intellect. Over the years, systems of his design have been installed throughout Canada and the United States as well as internationally; in China, Cairo, Belize and multiple European locations.

Claus was always dedicated to his work and remained with Pirelli Cable until his sudden passing. Claus was a friend to all and willing to share his experiences and knowledge to anyone who sought his help. His friends at Pirelli, especially his family, and the entire cable industry will miss him greatly.
