Hans R. Gnerlich

Since 1985, Dr. Gnerlich has worked in cable fault locating and cable and equipment testing and has gained a great deal of field experience on all types of underground and submarine cable and transmision line installations. He is a member of the Power Engineering Society of the IEEE, in which he is active in several working groups, developing guidelines for cable fault locating, cable testing, and diagnostic testing of power apparatus. He presently chairs ICC Project C21, "Guide for Fault Locating on Shielded Power Cable Systems", and ICC Project C18, "Guide for Field Testing of Shielded Power Cable Systems Using Very Low Frequency (VLF)".

Dr. Gnerlich received his graduate education in Germany and in the USA and holds Master, Dipl. Ing. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering. Throughout his career, he has been primarily interested in the fields of instrumentation, measurement, and non-destructive testing. He started as Professor of Electrical Engineering at Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and the University of South Alabama at Mobile. In 1979, he joined industry as an entrepreneur and established, in succession, the instrumentation companies, Bitronics, Inc., HDW Electronics, Inc. and Cable Dynamics, Inc.

In 1993, Dr. Gnerlich added Gnerlich, Inc., an engineering & consulting company, for cable fault locating and cable system testing to help utilities maintain cable system integrity, minimize cable system downtimes, and reduce fault locating costs.
