February 5, 2007 - Passing of Larry Kelly

Larry Kelly passed away on Friday February 2 after a long battle with cancer. Larry was an active member of the ICC committee for the last 40 years. His commitment and professionalism to our industry has been extraordinary and we will all miss his friendship. Our thoughts are with Rosemarie and their family.  Click link for published obituary.

Mr. Kelly received a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering degree from Villanova University in Villanova, Pennsylvania. In 1995, he retired as Director of Engineering Development from The Okonite Company after 24 years of service and became a consultant for his own company, Kelly Cables.

He held various positions in Manufacturing, Research and Engineering over a 40 year career in the Wire & Cable Industry. He was Chairman of the Insulated Cable Engineers Association (ICEA) Working Group on Power Cables for the Mining Industry, which was responsible for the ICEA Portable Cable Standard presently in effect. While a member of ICEA he received the Irving Middleton Award. After retirement he continued as an honorary member of ICEA. During his working career he was a cable advisor to the Association of American Railroad (AAR). He has been a member of the Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineers (IEEE) for 35 years and obtained the rank of Senior Member.

He was active for many years and served as Chairman of Subcommittee 3 Cable Characteristics of Insulated Conductors Committee. He was a 25 year member of the Society of Mining Engineers (SME) of AIME. He was a voting member on the National Electrical Code(NEC). He taught Cable Engineering Courses at UCLA and the University of Wisconsin.

Larry was the author of several IEEE papers and other publications on Cable Design, Electrical Testing, Cable Installation, and Cable Ampacities.
