It is with sadness that we learned of the passing of Chairman Shan Nandi on Sunday May 4th. This came as an enormous shock. He was such an active person, and so healthy and young, it is still hard to comprehend. In addition to his family and to ComEd, this has been and will continue to be a huge loss for ICC. He had so much energy and so many great ideas.
Shantanu (Shan) Nandi received his B.S. (Honors) in Electrical Engineering from Jabalpur University, India in 1968 and his MSEE from the Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa in 1971. For his Master’s degree thesis he developed an Analog Simulation of Synchronous Machines connected to transmission lines. As an alumnus, he has offered seminars at the Graduate School of Electrical Engineering in the field of his expertise.
Upon graduation, he joined Commonwealth Edison Company in Chicago and held several positions in Engineering and Planning Departments. Mr. Nandi’s responsibilities included development of thermal capabilities of all Transmission and Distribution lines in the system for bulk power operations. In 1992, he was appointed as the company’s Consulting Engineer for “High Voltage Wires and Cables”.
As a Senior Member of the IEEE Power Engineering Society, Shan actively participated in the Administrative Committee of ICC. He was the Chair of IEEE Insulated Conductors Committee Working Group C23D, Guide to the factors to be considered in the planning, design, and installation of transmission overhead/underground terminal.
In 2003, he applied for a patent on the design of Fiber Optic Integrated Overhead Transmission Conductor (FOTC). Shan is the author/co-author of numerous publications on wire and cable engineering. He was an adjunct professor at Oakton Community College in Des Plaines, Illinois, U.S.A.
