Distinguished physicist and authority on dielectrics, of San Antonio,Fla.,94 Robert M. Eichhorn, 94, passed away on Nov. 23, 2016. He was born in East Orange, N.J., in 1922, lived in Westfield, N.J., and moved to Lakewood, N.J., in 1999. He was a physicist, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and a church leader, moderator of the Congregational Church in Westfield, N.J. He graduated from Drew University and completed his graduate studies in physics, chemistry and mathematics at Stevens Institute of Technology, The Polytechnic Institute ofBrooklyn, and Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.
Mr. Eichhorn retired as a senior research associate at Union Carbide Corp. in 1993 and continued as an indepen dent consultant in the field of high voltage and high frequency organic dielectrics 1 for five years. He was also a visiting research associate at The U.S. National Bureau of Standards for a short time, advisor to Nippon Unicar in 1 Japan and Unifos in Sweden. He served as associate editor of the "Trans. On Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena," co-editor of Vol. 2A "Engineering Dielectrics," and published over 40 technical papers and encyclopedia articles, a few translated into German, French, Japanese, and Spanish.
Mr. Eichhorn was honored by Drew University with its "Alumni Award for Outstand- ing Achievement in Science," by the IEEE with election to Fellowship and the "Dakin Award for Distinguished Technical Achievement (in Dielectrics)," and by the Wire Association International with its "Mordica Memorial Award."
Mr. Eichhorn was pre-deceased by his beloved wife of 64'years, Ruth Connolly Eichhorn. His survivors include his daughter Linda Hileman and her husband, Gary, of San Antonio, Fla.;his son, R. Scott Eichhorn and his wife, Joan, of Basking Ridge, N.J.; four grandchildren, Robert Henry and his wife, Jessica, Lori Hays and her husband, Mike, Tom Eichhorn and his wife, Tina, Lisa Kehoe and her husband, Tom; and five great-grand children, Tyler and Hailey Hays, and Tyler, Connor, and Teigan Kehoe. He also leaves his brother, Harry, and his wife, Kathy.
Visitation will be held on Friday, Dec. 2, 2016, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the D'Elia Funeral Home, 1300 Vermont Ave., Lakewood, N.J. 08701. Funeral service will be held on Friday, Dec. 2, 2016, at 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will take place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield, N.J.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Bob's memory to LifePath Hospice, 12470 Telecom Drive, Suite 300 West, Temple Terrace, Fla.33637. . Bob was a wonderful man and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
ICC Biography
Robert M. Eichhorn was a Research Associate (Physics) in the Polyolefins Specialities Department of Union Carbide Corporation, which he joined in 1954, and a Research Associate at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. He graduated from Drew University in 1951 and did graduate work in metallurgy at Stevens Institute of Technology, in crystallography at the Polytechnic Institute of New York, and in radiation physics at Rutgers the State Universitv of New Jersey. His responsibilities were in the field of measurements and research an dielectric materials used for electrical insulation.
Mr. Eichhorn has served the IEEE and DEIS as Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Electrical Insulation, as a member of the AdComm, as chairman of the Awards and the Fire Hazards of Electrical Insulation committees, He was also an active member of the Insulated Conductors Committee of the PES, the Board of the CEIDP when it was sponsored by the National Research Council, the American Physical Society, ASTM, and CIGRE. He received the Alumni Award for Achievement in the Sciences from Drew University in 1977, the Thomas W. Dakin Technical Achievement Award 1990 and the Wire Association International Mordica Memorial Award the same year.
