He received several degrees in Business Administration from the University of Lausanne in 1973. In 1976, he received the Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Florida. From 1976 to 1981 he was at the California State University at Fresno. Since 1981 he has been at Georgia Institute of Technology where he is active in the general areas of power systems and electrical energy conversion. He serves as a consultant in these fields in the U.S. and Europe. He is the Associate Director of the School of Computer and Electrical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology and Director of the Electrical Engineering program at Georgia Institute of Technology Lorraine, the European extension of Georgia Tech in France.

Professor Püttgen's current research interests are in the analysis, design, and operation of electrical energy systems, both from the technical and economical viewpoints. He has recently been involved with projects relating to generation and transmission system planning and coordination as well as projects relating to the integration of alternate energy sources such as geothermal and solar into existing electrical energy systems. Recent research contracts are in the areas of power electronics as well as homostatic utility controls, real time power simulators for system dispatcher training, and expert systems in electric power.
