PES-ICC Charlotte - Spring 1999
If you plan to come early or stay late there will be a lot of good events going on. You can check some of these out on the Charlotte Convention and Visitors Bureau website. Some in particular are as follows:
- Discovery Place - This is a hands on science museum that is just a few blocks from the hotel. This is a neat place to spend some time.
- IMAX Theater at Discovery Place - This is an IMAX theater (7 story screen) that is adjacent to Discovery Place. They will be showing the "Living Sea" and also "Thrill Ride: The Science of Fun" while you are here.
- Paramount's Carowinds Theme Park - A typical theme park that is fun for the young and young at heart. Carowinds is located about 10 miles from the hotel on the North Carolina/South Carolina border.
- Charlotte Knights Baseball - This is a AAA baseball team that is affiliated with the Florida Marlins. Good cheap fun. Knights stadium is located about 14 miles from the hotel just across the state line and very near Carowinds.
- Charolotte Hornets NBA Team - Looks like we can forget professional basketball this season!
- Charlotte Motor Speedway - It doesn't get any better than this! Here's a partial lineup :
- 5/21 The Winston Qualifying and two No Bull Qualifying races
- 5/22 The Winston and an ARCA race
- 5/26 Pole Night and a NASCAR Goody's Dash Series race
- 5/29 Carquest Auto Parts 300 race - NASCAR Busch Series
- 5/30 Coca-Cola 600 - NASCAR Winston Cup Series - (The big boys)
- UAW-GM Teamwork Parade and Fireworks - 5/25 at night - one block from the hotel.
- Speed Street Festival - 5/27 thru 5/29 - Covers about a 10 to 12 block area begining one block from the hotel. Three bandstands with nationally known entertainers, race simulators, show cars, games, and a vast number of food stands.
- Arts - There will most likely be a play and other forms of entertainment at the Blumenthal Theater, Spirit Square, and Ovens Auditorium while you are in Charlotte. Check with the Visitors Bureau or call when you arrive to obtain a schedule. The Blumenthal Theater and Spirit Square are about 4 blocks from the hotel. Ovens Auditorium is about 3 miles away.
- Blockbuster Pavilion - An outdoor venue near the Speedway. There will most likely be a major entertainer here some time during the week.
- YMCA - For you health nuts who like to work out, there is a complete YMCA attached to the hotel. They have some great facilities that you will be able to use during your stay.
- Spencer Train Shops - Spencer, NC was a major train station in the old days. Work there today involves the restoration and display of locomotives. This is a rare chance to get to see and put your hands on some really neat machinery. Located about 45 miles NE of Charlotte on I-85.
- North Carolina Mountains - Beautiful scenery about 2 hours from Charlotte. Blowing Rock, NC is a really neat little mountain village. Biltmore House, located in Ashville, NC is one of the largest homes ever constructed in America. An unbelievable house/mansion/castle whatever you want to call it!
- North and South Carolina Beaches - About 4 hours from Charlotte. Myrtle Beach, SC has everything. Plays, music, food, shows, .....you name it.....and plenty of it. It will be packed this time of year (it may be motorcycle week, so you might want to check). The North Carolina beaches are a bit more residential in nature.
There is a bunch of other stuff to do, but I don't have time to put it all down. If there is anything in specific that you are interested in, let me know and I will get you plugged in while you are here.
