At the upcoming Spring 1999 ICC meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina, we will have organized activities on Monday, May 24th and Tuesday, May 25thfor ICC companions. Monday is a tour of Historic South End. Tuesday is a tour of the Mint Museum of Crafts and Design and the Mint Museum of Art. The tours are briefly described below. If you are interested, just have the appropriate block checked on the meeting registration form and we will take care of the rest.
The Historic South End community was the original "south end" of Charlotte. As one of Charlottes oldest urban corridors, South End has many stories to tell. Gateway signs welcome visitors to the community while historic markers share bits of the areas past.
Today, South End is being revitalized. New sidewalks, street trees and period lighting have made the area more attractive as new restaurants shops and entertainment facilities have made it more appealing. There are over 50 different restaurants, art galleries and shopping opportunities.
Bring your credit cards or just browse the area. This should be a fun, casual trip. A bus will take us to South End, leaving the hotel around 10:00 am. We should return around 3:00 pm.
Cost: $25.00 per person (includes lunch)
On Tuesday morning, we will visit a new center in Charlotte that features crafts made with ceramics, glass, fiber, metal and wood. This should be an interesting experience since their goal is to be an internationally known Center with a permanent collection, changing exhibits and educational programs.
For lunch, we will have a bite at the Providence Café. I have heard only good things about this restaurant and cannot wait to check out their menu.
In the afternoon, we will visit the Mint Museum of Art. This is North Carolinas first art museum and one of the leading museums of the Southeast with holdings of art in American paintings, pre-Columbian art, regional crafts, historic costumes, African art, and gold coins minted in Charlotte.
A bus will take us to the museums, leaving the hotel around 9:30 am and returning around 3:00 pm.
Cost: $25.00 per person (includes lunch)
More specific details on departure and arrival times for each tour will be available at the ICC registration desk. I hope to see all of you in Charlotte!
Sincerely,
Marjorie Hartlein
