The chemical, electrical and mechanical characteristics of conductors used for insulated conductors. Included are material construction, dimensions and performance.

Mission Statement:

Our mission is to keep members informed on performance and operating characteristics and developments of metal conductors. Presentations and discussions will be used to coordinate IEEE conductor standards with those of other standards writing organizations.

Conductor sizing in metric continues to be discussed.

A tri-national (US-Canada-Mexico) standard on thermalplastic insulated wire and cable is being written as UL83, CAN/CSA-C22.2 #75 and NMX-J-010-ANCE. We reviewed many of the conductor tables and noted both AWG and sq mm were included.

Appendix A, which is not mandatory is written in mandatory language in order that it could be adopted later. The reason being that the national codes do not as yet recognize metric wire and cable sizes.

After considerable discussion it was agreed AWG and kcmil sizes will be with us for a considerable time yet.

Fall 1997

Austin C. Tingley ( Power Engineers Inc.) Chairman, reported that that the Conductors Subcommittee met on Wednesday, November 5, 1997 with 26 members and guests present.

R.L. Hughey, Jr. Southwire Co gave a presentation on the superconductor project being worked on at Southwire. This was a two part presentation in that he covered the superconducting material in Sub 4 and later in the morning covered the overall project in sub 8/9. The cable being built will be feeder cable for the Southwire plant in Carrollton GA.

A copy of Mr. Hughey’s presentation at sub 4 appears in Appendix IV.

Spring 1997

Mr.Bruce Kennedy, Phelps Dodge Corporation made a presentation on "The Story of Copper". This was a slide presentation with many old photos of yesteryear in the Arizona mining industry.

His presentation started with copper mining in the 1860's and the processing of the raw ore through to cathode and rod. There was no printed script to his presentation however he left all attendees with a brochure which outlined many of the items that he covered. The brochure, though not suitable for inclusion with the minutes, was appreciated by all present.

With the amount of good discussion that took place it became obvious that the topic was one of interest.
