The IEEE Insulated Conductors Committee is issuing a Call for Presentations for its Fall 1999 meeting in St. Petersburg, FL. The ICC is an international forum on the design, testing and application of electrical cable systems, its insulation and jacketing systems, and associated accessories. The ICC also prepares and maintains standards and guides for the IEEE covering a wide variety of subjects related to electrical cable systems.
ICC Fall '99 seeks presentations about significant contributions to the broad field of electrical cable systems. Presentations are invited which are concerned with both theory and practice which fall into one of the following areas:
- Cable Construction and Design: issues related to materials, construction, design and manufacturing of insulated cables.
- Accessories: issues related to testing, construction and design of cable terminations and joints.
- Cable Systems: issues related to testing, assembly and operation of cable systems.
- Station, Control and Utilization Cables: issues related to testing, assembly and operation and construction of cable systems not normally employed on transmission and distribution systems. This includes station cables, control cables, fiber optic cables, etc.
Presentations are limited to 15-20 minutes (which includes a suggested 5 minute question and answer period).
Each presenter is required to submit an abstract of 100-150 words. These abstracts will be posted on the ICC website and will be used by attendees to plan their sessions.
Presenters are encouraged to make their commitment and submit their abstract as soon as possible but no later than October 11th to one of the following Chairman (as appropriate)
Subcommittee A - Cable Construction and Design - David Bogden, d.t.bogden@ieee.org
Subcommittee B - Accessories: Bob Gear, Underground Systems Inc., r.b.gear@ieee.org
Subcommittee C - Cable Systems: John H. Cooper, Power Delivery Consultants, j.h.cooper@ieee.org
Subcommittee D - Station, Control and Utilization Cable: Art Fitzpatrick, a.r.fitzpatrick@ieee.org
Presenters are reminded that in accordance with the ICC Guidelines, the following must be observed in both the slides and in the documents submitted for inclusion in the Minutes of the ICC:
- Overt commercialism is not allowed in technical presentations.
- Company name and/or logo should be limited to first slide/page of technical presentation or handout.
- Subcommittee/Working Group Chairmen are responsible for enforcement of policy.
Finally, presenters are reminded to make slides and overheads clear and concise. Less is almost always better and please LARGE FONTS! Those considering computer-based presentations should be sure to read the following notice.
The Minutes of the ICC will include the following based on your presentation:
- [Preferred] A short (maximum of five pages, including graphics) summary of the presentation.
- Copies of the slides (prepared according to the ICC Guideline) with conclusion/implications summary statement.
Please contact the Subcommittee Chairmen listed above for more guidelines regarding your presentation.
To see a list of the currrently scheduled topics, visit the Technical Presentations page.
As with previous meetings, the ICC will provide a computer, computer projection system, ovehead projector and slide projector to facilitate Presentations during the Opening and Subcommittee sessions.
Though ICC has provided a computer in the past, some presenters have preferred to use their own machines or had presentations too large to be transferred on a floppy. We observed that there was considerable delay when computers had to be swapped and in some cases, the computers have been unable to communicate with the projection equipment. We are asking that all presentations be preloaded onto the ICC computer. This will greatly improve the flow of the meetings. For those presentations too large to be transferred on a floppy, a Zip Drive and a CD will also be available.
Also, there will be preload and test sessions Sunday afternoon from 2-4 pm and Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 7-8 am to enable you to transfer your presentation to the ICC computer hard drive (which will speed the presentations) and to view your slides with the equipment that will be used during the Subcommittee meetings.
Make slides clear and concise. Less is almost always better! Use LARGE FONTS! Visual aids can make or break a presentation and we want your presentation to be a success!
At the St. Petersburg meeting we will provide:
- A Pentium driven laptop computer with a 3.5" floppy
- Microsoft's PowerPoint 97 software
- An SVGA video projector
- A Zip Drive
- A CD-ROM
- Browser software (Internet Explorer or Netscape)
