Re: 1998 Fall Meeting : October 25-28, 1998, St. Petersburg, FL

Dear ICC Members and Guests:

With this letter I cordially invite you to the 104th meeting of the Insulated Conductors Committee Meeting. The meeting will be held at the Don CeSar Hotel in St. Petersburg, FL on October 25-28, 1998. I look forward to working with all of you as we return to the Don CeSar, the traditional fall home for the ICC.

If you plan to attend the meeting, please read all of this letter. It is packed with useful information that you need to know. The format for this meeting will be very different from what you have known in the past. We have changed the schedule in an effort to improve our meetings. (More on the changes later in this letter.)

We have negotiated a very attractive $135 US single or double room rate at the Don CeSar. Please make your hotel reservation as soon as possible by mailing in the reservation card or by calling 1-800-282-1116. The cutoff date for room reservations is September 23, 1998. The ICC is committed to a minimum occupancy in order to avoid a charge for meeting rooms. So please use the official hotel for your accommodations to help us meet this requirement.

Special air fare and car rental rates for our meeting are available as follows:

Other useful information:

Hotel Parking: If you are staying at the Don CeSar, parking is free. If not, the cost is $6.00/day. A shuttle will run between the Tradewinds Hotel and the Don CeSar for those not staying at the Don.

Airport Trans.: Airline Limousine (The Limo): $17 one way, $30 round trip.

Taxi: About $30 one way.

St. Petersburg is a wonderful city with lots to do and see. Information about St. Pete and the Don CeSar can be accessed from the ICC web page under Future Meetings. At this time of year, the weather in St. Pete is generally very pleasant with an average high of 82 °F (28 °C) – but evenings can be a little cool, so bring a sweater just in case.

The official dress code of the ICC is "business casual." Leave your coats and ties at home - unless you just can’t help yourself.

As usual, there is a program for spouses - please see the attached letter which describes the program details.

Meeting registration forms have been posted. Important registration tips are:

Other meeting tips are shown below.

If this is your first meeting or you want to learn more about the ICC, please attend the Orientation Session on Sunday afternoon. There are many different sessions at ICC meetings which cover a multitude of subjects related to insulated conductors. Information presented at Orientation will help you find the sessions which are of interest to you.

If you are a working group or subcommittee chair or vice chair, please plan to attend the All Chairs meeting on Monday morning at 7:00 am.

All meeting attendees are encouraged to attend the Opening Session on Monday morning at 8:00 am. During this session you will learn about last minute changes and special activities which will take place during the meeting. You will also see your fellow ICC members receive awards for accomplishments made throughout the year. Our special speaker for this session is Dr. Teddy Püttgen, electric power engineering professor at Georgia Tech. Teddy is very active in the IEEE Power Engineering society and is currently PES Vice President for Education and Industry Relations. I have asked him to talk to us about the changes taking place within the IEEE PES, which, in case you did not know, is our parent organization. Teddy is intimately involved with the PES so come prepared with your questions - I guarantee he will have some answers.

On Wednesday afternoon, we will have Didactic and Educational Programs. Please see the meeting agenda for details.

If you plan to make a presentation, please remember the following:

Visual aids can make or break a presentation and we want your presentation to be a success!

Note: For the first time, presenters will have access to equipment which will allow you to make Powerpoint presentations. It will only be available at the Subcommittee meetings – but that is where most presentations will be made. So bring your diskette and we will celebrate ICC’s leap into the 20th century!

Meeting Changes

Please note that the schedule for this meeting is very different from the past.

What are the changes?

The new Subcommittees are (follow the hyperlinks for more detail):

Why make the changes?

The attached meeting Schedule and Status sheets reflect the changes. Please review them carefully so you can make the most out of the new meeting format. This is a trial run. If it works as planned, we will make a permanent change to the format. Once the meeting is over, let me or any of the subcommittee chairman know how you liked the changes.

That’s all I can think of for now. If you have any questions or comments, please send me an email at r.hartlein@ieee.org. Don’t forget to check out the ICC WEB page for the latest information on the fall meeting - including a list of presentations which will occur during the Subcommittee meetings. This list is updated regularly, so check the WEB page often. You can also learn more about the ICC - what it is and how it just might be able to help you and your company.

See you in St. Pete.

Sincerely,

Rick Hartlein

Chairman, ICC
