November 15, 2001 - AdCom Sets New Policy on ICC Minutes
In Atlanta, the ICC AdCom decided that our minutes will only be available on CD starting with the Spring 2002 Colorado Springs meeting. Chairman Walker explained that the trial period where both paper and electronic media have been offered has been successful, but very labor intensive to do the layout for both types. He also noted that the production and mailing costs have sometimes been borne by individual companies and that finding such sponsors is getting harder to do. It was noted that ICC Secretary Jim Medek has worked the bugs in production of the CDs and that the CDs provide greater value since graphs and charts are readable and in color.
November 9, 2001 - Fall 2001 Educational Material Posted
ICC Education Program Chairman Steve Szaniszlo has posted PowerPoint and PDF versions of the Educational presentations given at the Atlanta meeting. Our thanks to Steve and to each of the presenters for their hard work to make the program a success. The documents are available in both their native PowerPoint format and in Adobe PDF format. November 9, 2001 - Fall 2001 Award Recipients Announced
ICC Awards Chairman, Lauri Hiivala recognized several of our own for their hard work and accomplishments at the Fall meeting in Atlanta. An IEEE/PES Certificate of Appreciation will be presented to the family of the late Wiley J. Pickett for Services Rendered as Chair, Working Group C12, Guide for Distribution Cable Installation Methods in Duct Systems. Thomas Rodenbaugh will also be presented with the IEEE/PES Certificate of Appreciation for Services Rendered as Chair, Working Group C13, Installation of Cables Using Trenchless Techniques. ICC Certificates of Appreciation will be presented to Ted Nishioka and Glen Bertini for the best presentation to Subcommittee A at the Spring 2001 meeting. Finally, the 2001 Distinguished Service Award was presented to Kent W. Brown. Congratulations to all. To learn more about ICC sponsored awards and their recipients, check out the Awards page.

November 6, 2001 - Fall 2001 Meeting Is History
The Fall 2001 ICC meeting is now "in the books". While ICC registration topped out at 392, the joint meeting with the initial joint meeting with the IEEE T&D Conference was not without problems. The lure of the exhibit hall siphoned many away from their usual Subcommittee and Working Group meetings. The ICC Administrative Committee met Friday November 2nd in Atlanta to brainstorm ways to make future joint meetings less of a hassle and how to get our vendors off the floor and back into the meetings.

September 5, 2001 - Tom Arnold to Become Membership Secretary
In a note to ICC members, Chairman Walker states, "It is my pleasure to announce that Thomas Arnold has formally accepted the position of ICC Assistant Secretary of Membership, replacing Wes Spencer. Wes has new responsibilities that will occupy too much of his time to continue in the position. I would like for all of ICC to join me in welcoming Thomas aboard and thanking Wes for his contributions to the ICC. It is my understanding that Wes will still be active at the ICC meetings."

August 8, 2001 - ICC Policy on Signs to be Waived for the Joint ICC/T&D Meeting
Long time ICC attendees are probably aware of the policies in place to limit commercialism at ICC meetings. One facet of the referenced guidelines seeks to limit commercialism by prohibiting signs at ICC meetings. After some discussion, your Officers have recognized that our hotel will likely be shared by ICC related and non-ICC related vendors and that the convention center facilities will not be under the usual ICC rules. Therefore, the ICC will not enforce the vendor sign policy for this meeting. Technical presentations must meet the provisions for non-commercialism in the Guideline document linked above.
August 8, 2001 - Spring 2001 Minutes on CD in the Mail
ICC Secretary Jim Medek has been working overtime to make sure that the Spring 2001 minutes on CD get out early and it has paid off. If you ordered a copy in Dearborn, you should receive yours any day now (your webmaster received his yesterday). Thanks Jim!!!! July 6, 2001 - Bill Taylor Named as Vice Chairman/Treasurer Elect
Chairman Mike Walker announced that Bill Taylor of 3M has accepted the position of ICC Vice Chairman/Treasurer Elect. Walker welcomed Bill into the leadership of the ICC and is asking members to support Bill in this endeavor. Bill graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1975 with a BSEE degree. He spent 14 years as an electrical engineer for several petrochemical plants on the Houston ship channel before accepting a position with 3M in 1989. Since that time he has served as a product development engineer in the cable accessories area. Bill is a member of IAS and PCIC as well as PES. Bill has been serving as Chairman of WG B1, responsible for revision of IEEE 48, Standard Test Procedures and Requirements for High-Voltage Alternating Cable Terminations 2.5 kV through 765kV, and WG B10, Guide to Select Terminations for Shielded Power Cables 5-46kV.

April 27, 2001 - Spring 2001 Meeting is History
ICC Chairman Mike Walker announced that approximately 270 engineers attended the Dearborn meeting. Our thanks go to the folks at DTE for their hospitality and help in putting together the meeting. Throughout the meeting, Walker and the other Officers reminded members that the Fall 2001 meeting will be held in conjunction with the T&D show and that planning for presentations needs to be underway now.
April 19, 2001 - New Draft of IEEE 400-3 Posted
Matt Mashikian, Chairman of WG C19, has posted draft 4 of IEEE 400-3, Partial Discharge Testing of Shielded Power Cable Systems in a Field Environment on the ICC Download page.  The draft is available in MS-Word and Adobe Acrobat format. The draft will be the basis of the C19 meeting (see the Special Activities section of the Spring 2001 Presentations page).
April 16, 2001 - Fall 2000 Minutes Delayed
Jim Medek, ICC Assistant Secretary for Publications has announced that there have been some unforeseen delays in the production of the Fall 2000 minutes.  The CD versions have been mailed out this past weekend. The printed minutes for those members with US addresses will be mailed out today. Because of the time delay in the mailing of minutes outside the US those minutes will not be mailed, but will be available at the registration desk in Detroit. Should you have any questions please contact Jim at JMedek@aol.com  Jim will have a table at the ICC Mini-Expo and will be able to answer any questions you have regarding the minutes on CD.  In addition if you have any questions regarding the Minutes Manager program that would be a good time to address them.
April 13, 2001 - Special Panel Session on Loadbreak Separable Connectors
Subcommittee B Officers Bob Gear and Tom Champion announced today that their Spring 2001 meeting will include a panel session on Utility Experience Using the New Loadbreak Separable Connectors Designed to Address Partial Vacuum Induced Interface Flashovers. April 4, 2001 - New Mini-Expo Exhibitor
Chairman John Densley has announced a special meeting of the Water Tank Testing Procedures Working Group for 3:30 to 5:30 pm, Tuesday, April 24th. John's WG maintains IEEE P1407 - Guide for Accelerated Aging Tests for Medium-Voltage Extrude Dielectric Power Cables Using Water Filled Tanks. The guide had sections on test specimens, prior tests and preconditioning of specimens, test structure, temperature, water, voltage, failures, abnormalities, diagnostics, data analysis, and final report. It did not specify test values but gave details of the facilities and test methods that were available in different laboratories. The guide has now been available for more than two years and, to start the revision process, input is requested from anyone with experience in using the present guide. He's put out a call for that user feedback to faciltate discussions at the meeting.

April 3, 2001 - Fall 2001 T&D/ICC Hotel Reservations Have Opened
As noted earlier, the Fall 2001 ICC meeting will be held in conjunction with the T&D show. There will be 14,000 other engineers looking for hotel rooms, so we strongly encourage you to make your reservations as soon as soon as possible. Please see the important update on hotel rooms and the reservation process on the . As a reminder, you can now register online for Hotel reservations for the Fall 2001 T&D/ICC Meeting. To ensure that you get a room at the ICC host Hotel, The Sheraton, you should place your reservations ASAP. Please alert your fellow ICC members who be attending the Fall Meeting that they should register for the Hotel immediately, if they want to stay at the ICC Hotel. If your schedule changes, you can cancel if needed, without penalty, if you cancel 72 hours prior to your arrival date. Remember to mark in the special requirements section " ICC" to give your request a higher priority for the room request.

March 30, 2001 - Lite Breakfast and Coffee at the ICC
ICC Vice Chairman Ken Bow announced today that the Spring 2001 meeting will feature a lite breakfast every morning to get you going. We'll have some kind of roll or Danish, light fare only. If you need a "construction-worker" breakfast you'll have to eat elsewhere. It will be available from 7:30-8:30 daily. Coffee will also be served during the morning break (just after the Opening Session on Monday) and from 10:15 until 10:30 on Tuesday and Wednesday. Thanks Ken!
March 30, 2001 - Distribution 2001
Close on the heels of the Fall 2001 ICC meeting at the T&D Conference in Atlanta, there's another meeting which may be of interest to ICC members. Its the 6th International Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exhibition (also known as Distribution 2001). Its being held in Brisbane, Australia from 11th through the 14th of November. Distribution 2001 is a major bi-annual event on the energy industry calendar for Asia and the Pacific. The last conference attracted approximately 2500 delegates from around the world. The conference is hosted by major Australian utilities and industry associations. Check out their sharp website for all the details.

March 19, 2001 - Special Presentation in Subcommittee D
Immediately following the ICC Opening Session on Monday morning, Subcommittee D will feature a special presentation by Charles Huettner, Senior Policy Advisor for Aviation, Office of Science and Technology Policy, Executive Office of the President. Mr Huettner will address the group regarding the recently published report, Review of Federal Programs for Wire Systems Safety. The scope of their study was very broad: defense, space, nuclear power, transportation and more. Sub D officers Brown and Merando have scheduled this as the first presentation of their session, please plan to attend.
March 16, 2001 - IMPORTANT REMINDER !!!
With the Spring meeting just over a month away, we've learned from the Dearborn Hyatt that ICC room registrations are running well below our commitments. To avoid a charge for meeting rooms, please make your reservations before the cutoff date of March 26th. We have negotiated special rates of $135 US single or double for ICC members and guests. When making your reservations remember to let the hotel know that you are a part of the IEEE ICC meeting. If you've already made the reservations but didn't specify that you are part of the IEEE ICC meeting, please call them back at 1-800-233-1234 or 1-313-593-1234 and update your record.

March 14, 2001 - Call for Presentations for the Transnational Luncheon
Harry Orton has issued a Call for Presentations for the Transnational Luncheon, which in keeping with tradition will be held on Tuesday (April 24th) during the Spring meeting. If you would like to make a presentation at the luncheon Harry asks that you send him a title and abstract as soon as possible at heorton@email.msn.com   so that you can be added to the agenda. Harry reminds speakers that commercialism must be minimized with the company logo on the first slide only. Each presentation should be limited to 5-7 minutes and related to international cable projects. Presentations on transmission and distribution cable projects and their accessories are most welcome as well as unique applications of power cables.

March 6, 2001 - Ted Balaska Honored in the March Suncoast Signal
The death of Ted Balaska on January 15,2001 created a large hole in the ICC which may take years to adequately fill, both professionally and personally. Our own Roland Watkins had the opportunity to honor Ted in the March issue of the Suncoast Signal, an IEEE Sectional newsletter. Roland has shared the article with us. We've posted it beneath his biographical sketch on a page which honors him as a Past Chairman of the ICC. Our thanks go to Roland for expressing thoughts and sentiments shared by many.
March 5, 2001 - New Mini-Expo Exhibitor Announced
Vice Chairman Ken Bow has announced the another Mini-Expo Exhibitor for Spring 2001, Programma Electric. They'll be demonstrating a high voltage dielectric spectroscopy system for diagnostics of water tree deteriorated extruded insulation. If your company would like to be a part of this Expo, be sure to see the fact sheet. Move fast, the April 13th deadline is approaching!
February 28, 2001 - ICC Search Engine
Thanks to the good folks at IEEE, we now have a ICC Search tool. You'll notice the button on the meun frame at left has changed from IEEE Search to ICC Search. Now you can search using obscure terms like Hartlein or "tree retardant" and know that the "hits" returned will all be from the ICC website (the previous search engine looked at the entire IEEE Web). Give it a try.
February 26, 2001 - First Mini-Expo Exhibitor for Spring 2001 Announced
Vice Chairman Ken Bow has announced the first Mini-Expo Exhibitor for Spring 2001, USi. They'll be displaying their PC/Windows based software for cable ampacity analysis. If your company would like to be a part of this Expo, be sure to see the fact sheet. Note the deadline is fast approaching, applications must be RECEIVED by Vice Chairman/Treasurer by April 13, 2001.

February 16, 2001 - Spring 2001 Keynote Speaker Announced
Ron May, Vice President, Energy Delivery and Service, DTE Energy, will be the Keynote speaker during the Opening Session of the Spring 2001 meeting. He is responsible for transmission and distribution activities and the Customer Service organization of DTE Energy Distribution. February 1, 2001 - Partial Discharge Testing
At the Fall 2000 meeting, the Educational Program was focused on Partial Discharge Testing. ICC Educational Program Chairman Steve Szaniszlo has gotten a copy of the slides presented by Steve Boggs of UCONN and a copy of a recent paper on the same subject which Boggs co-authored with John Densley of OPT. Both have been posted for your reference on the ICC Educational page.

January 15, 2001 - Ted Balaska
This truly sad announcement was made by ICC Chairman Mike Walker today, "It is my sad responsibility to inform the group that at approximately 4:00 am this morning in Blake Hospital, Bradenton Florida, Ted Balaska passed away. Ted was one of the patriarchs of the ICC and the loss of his pressence at our meetings will be missed." Foundation-Lou Gerhings Disease, 21021 Ventura Blvd., Suite 231, Woodland Hills, Calif. 91364, or the American Cancer Society, 1750 17th St., Suite A, Sarasota, Fla. 34234. Ted was born in Detroit, served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and moved to Florida from New Jersey in 1995. He was a senior lifetime member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. The Officers and members of the ICC extend condolences to his wife, Barbara "Bobbie", daughter, Teri, son, Mark, and his three grandchildren.
