The ICC Website is changing. As this transition is made, our new format can be found at www.pesicc.org/ICCWP. Please send any comments or questions to mvh@voncorp.com.
Two important documents have been updated on the website,
of particular interest to all Working group chairs and vice chairs.
Standards Chair John Merando has updated the
standards status spreadsheet
to reflect some recent PAR extensions. WG Chairs/Vice Chairs should check
this to make sure their understanding of their PAR status matches the IEEE SA's
status.
Also updated are the
Policies and Procedures for Working Groups which were recently modified by
the IEEE-SA Audit Committee. Any questions about these changes should be
directed to Lauri Hiivala.
ICC's own Gabe Taylor was recently recognized as the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (NRC) Engineer of the Year. Gabe has been active in ICC for several years and now serves as Chair of WG D19 IEEE P 1844, Standard For Testing Fire Resistive Cables For Use In Nuclear Facilities and Vice Chair of WG D15 IEEE P1202 Vertical Tray Flame Test Protocol. Gabe is an Engineer in the NRC's Fire Research Branch in Rockville, MD. Each year the NRC selects its top Engineer from among its 3,800 employees. That Engineer then is automatically in competition for the Federal Engineer of the Year Award with candidates from 24 other Federal Agencies. Gabe will join these other winners for the announcement of the overall winner at a ceremony at the National Press Club in Washington, DC on February 26, 2015. Congratulations and good luck Gabe!!

Have you ever wondered why you should bother to come to a conference like an ICC meeting? Has your management ever asked why they should send you? IEEE.tv has recently posted the second in a series of short documentaries about "Why Conferences Matter". Have a look at this video to see how conferences have played a major part in the development of communities for technology professionals. You can find the video here.
The Insulated Conductors Committee Bahder Award was created in recognition of
the contributions made by Dr. George Bahder to the science and technology of
insulated power cables. The award consists of a plaque and a $2,500
stipend/scholarship that is made in the recipient’s name to an electric power
engineering department, or equivalent, at a university or college of the
recipient’s choice.
At the Spring 2012 Insulated Conductors Committee
meeting, Nagu Srinivas, who was awarded a plaque, requested that the $2,500
donation go to the Electrical Power Engineering Department of Arizona State
University. These funds supported Longfei Cui while a graduate student there.
His Master of Science thesis entitled Detection and Analysis of Partial
Discharges in Non-uniform Field is now available on the ICC Downloads section of
our website.
Those who were able to attend the opening session of the Spring meeting got to hear T&D World Editorial Director and former ICC regular Rick Bush give the keynote speech. Rick featured the ICC in his June 2014 "Global Viewpoint" editorial section in the T&D World Magazine. We've received permission ot post Rick's article here.
We had a highly successful Spring 2014 meeting in Kansas City, with an extermely large turnout. Numerous awards and recognitions were given out at the spring meeting, including the previously announced 2014 IEEE Herman Halperin Electric Transmission and Distribution Award to Willem Boone, and the presentation of the IEEE Fellow award to Kent Brown. Read more about these and the other awards given this spring by clicking here.
Rarely in ICC history has the Administrative Committee had an Ad Hoc discussion group. However, projections are for major changes in the electric utility industry over the next decade as distributed generation and other emerging technologies significantly alter the classic electric utility model of operation. Current economic trends suggest that business as usual with a conservative approach to decision making will no longer work. Utilities must be willing to take risk while ensuring service reliability and more directly addressing their customer needs and expectations. This meeting will include ICC administrative officers representing the various constituents of our industry discussing the impact of these major changes not only on electric utilities, but on our entire industry and on how the ICC must adapt to operate in this new environment. Panelist will include: Rachel Mosier – Utility Industry Consultant, John T. Smith – Cable Manufacturer, Thomas C. Champion – Academia, Frank Frentzas – Electric Utility, Rick Bush – Journalist. The discussion will be an open forum with participation by the attendees encouraged. The Administration Committee would like your ideas on what is taking place, how it is likely to impact ICC, and what ICC can do to maintain its value to the industry.
The final agenda has been posted today. Any last minute changes will be posted at registration. See you next week in Kansas City!
It is with sadness we announce the passing of long time ICC member Joseph H. (Joe) Snow, on Saturday, April 19, 2014. A link to his obituary can be found here.

Many thanks and much appreciation is due to Mark Fenger for his eight years serving as Recording Secretary. While we all realize the challenge of balancing our participation in volunteer activities like the ICC with our work responsibilities, most of us don't realize the vast amount of work that goes into generating the minutes of each meeting. Mark has decided it is time to relinquish that position to someone else, and as a result, please welcome our new Recording Secretary, Carl Wentzel, who was elected by Adcom this past week. Carl has big shoes to fill! Please give him your support.
